Toska Hill formed in Auckland in 2018 and developed an atmospheric blend of death and black metal marked by dense layering, dissonant tension, and a persistent sense of psychological unease. Their music revolves around themes of insanity, horror, and depression, expressed through a sound that shifts between crushing heaviness, bleak melodic passages, and moments of suffocating atmosphere. The band’s approach draws heavily from modern dissonant death metal and post‑black metal textures, but filters both through a distinctly introspective, oppressive mood.
The lineup has remained stable since the project’s inception. Drummer Jeremy Suckling brings a background in New Zealand’s extreme metal scene through work with Molest the Episcopate, Scoria, and Set on End. Guitarist, bassist, and keyboardist Joe Bonnett shapes the core of the band’s sound with layered instrumentation and a strong sense of atmosphere, informed by his work in Perditionist and past roles in Dawn of Azazel and other underground acts. Vocalist Ben Read, known for his work in Bridge Burner, The Mark of Man, and earlier contributions to Ulcerate and 8 Foot Sativa, adds a harsh, expressive vocal presence that reinforces the band’s psychological and emotional themes.
Toska Hill introduced themselves with the single Fell in 2018, establishing the bleak tone that would define their work. Their debut full‑length, Threshold of Nothing, Dweller of Ends (2020), expanded their sound into a more immersive and atmospheric form, blending dissonant riffing with slow‑burning tension and layered ambience. The EP A Willing Paralysis (2024) continued this evolution, refining their balance of aggression and atmosphere while deepening the thematic focus on psychological collapse and existential dread.
Active under Tentacles Industries, Toska Hill continue to carve out a distinct place within New Zealand’s extreme metal landscape, defined by emotional weight, atmospheric depth, and a commitment to exploring the darker edges of the human mind.
