Trautonist is a post‑black metal duo from Koblenz, founded in 2014 and named after the early electronic instrument Trautonium. Their sound blends blackgaze, atmospheric black metal, and shoegaze, drawing frequent comparisons to Alcest, Lantlôs, Heretoir, and Deafheaven. From the beginning, the project has been centered around the creative partnership of Dennis (all instruments, vocals) and Katharina (vocals), later joined by Hendrik on drums. Their music is marked by shimmering guitar layers, melancholic atmospheres, and a dual‑vocal approach that shifts between harsh screams and ethereal cleans.

The band debuted in 2016 with the single Distance, a track that immediately positioned them within the rising wave of German blackgaze. That same year they released their self‑titled full‑length Trautonist, which received strong underground attention for its emotional clarity, immersive production, and balance between aggression and dreamlike textures. Critics praised the album’s ability to merge post‑metal crescendos with blackened intensity, noting its cohesive songwriting and expressive vocal interplay.

Their second album, Ember (2018), marked a significant evolution. Reviews highlighted its kaleidoscopic shoegaze influences, refined production, and the involvement of Markus Siegenhort (LantlĂ´s) in mixing and mastering—an element that further tied the band to the German post‑black lineage. The album was described as technically impeccable, atmospheric, and emotionally restrained, with standout tracks such as “Smoke and Ember” showcasing the band’s ability to build tension through layered arrangements and dynamic pacing. Ember solidified Trautonist as one of the more polished and distinctive acts in the German blackgaze scene.

Despite limited public activity after 2018, the band’s work continues to circulate within post‑black metal communities, and their contributions—particularly their role in shaping the German branch of the genre—remain well‑regarded.
