Utvar emerged in 2011 as one of the most introspective and atmospheric projects within the Serbian underground, shaped entirely by multiāinstrumentalist Sifr Shraddha. In its earliest incarnation, Utvar explored a raw yet deeply melodic form of atmospheric black metal, marked by long, immersive compositions, dreamlike textures, and a strong emotional undercurrent. The project quickly distinguished itself through its poetic approach to themes such as silence, devotion, and the fragile boundary between dreams and death.
The debut fullālength Valcer tiÅ”ine i njene senke (2013) established Utvar’s identity: melancholic, atmospheric, and rooted in a uniquely Serbian sense of spiritual solitude. The music blended hypnotic tremolo lines with meditative pacing, creating a soundscape that felt both intimate and vast. By 2015, with the release of Silentium tuum est, BespuÄa, and the fullālength Matr, Utvar had fully embraced a more refined, emotional, and immersive direction. These works were praised in underground circles for their ability to merge black metal aesthetics with a dreamlike, almost sacred atmosphere.
As the project evolved, Utvar gradually shifted toward shoegaze and postāblack metal, softening the harsher edges in favor of shimmering guitars, reverbādrenched ambience, and a more ethereal vocal presence. The Ghosts EP (2018) marked a turning point, leaning heavily into atmospheric shoegaze textures while maintaining the emotional weight and introspective depth that defined the early years.
Throughout its existence, Utvar remained a deeply personal project, shaped by Sifr Shraddha’s involvement in numerous other underground actsāranging from black metal to ambient, ritual, and experimental music. His distinctive artistic voice, present across projects like Ljuska, Darminosia Dispera, and Plamen VeÄnosti, helped Utvar develop a recognizable aesthetic rooted in spiritual melancholy and dreamlike introspection.
In 2024, Utvar officially transitioned into a new phase under the name Svepna, signaling both continuity and rebirth. While the essence of the project remains intactādevotion to atmosphere, emotional depth, and the exploration of inner worldsāthe new name reflects a broader artistic horizon and a renewed commitment to sonic transformation.
