Vapaj (“cry” or “wail” in Serbian) was a short‑lived but striking presence in the Serbian underground, active between 2020 and 2024. Emerging from Belgrade, the project embraced a raw, uncompromising form of black metal rooted in traditional themes of Satanism, occult mysticism, and the darker aspects of spiritual rebellion. Despite its brief existence, Vapaj managed to carve out a distinct identity through its harsh sound, minimalist production, and confrontational aesthetic.

The project appeared during a period of renewed interest in Serbian black metal, contributing two singles that quickly circulated through the underground: Devoured by Jackals of Death and Raspad carstva nebeskog, both released in 2020. These tracks showcased Vapaj’s approach—cold, abrasive riffing, ritualistic atmospheres, and vocals steeped in venom and despair. The music drew from the rawer traditions of Eastern European black metal while maintaining a personal, almost claustrophobic sense of darkness.

Vapaj also appeared on the compilation Femikseta 9 (2021) with the track Devoured by Jackals of Death, which helped introduce the project to a wider audience within the regional underground. Although the band remained unsigned and operated independently, its aesthetic and thematic clarity earned it a small but dedicated following.

By 2024, Vapaj dissolved, leaving behind a compact but potent discography that reflects the intensity and nihilistic spirit of its brief existence. Its legacy remains tied to the raw, unfiltered expression of Serbian black metal at the dawn of the 2020s.
