Wedard is an atmospheric/depressive black metal entity from Memmingen, Bavaria, founded in late 2002 by multi-instrumentalist Andreas “Sternenfrost” Schnell as a solitary, deeply personal project. Emerging from the early 2000s wave of raw, emotionally charged black metal, Wedard quickly carved out a niche with a sound rooted in cold, melancholic riffing, distant screams, and a pervasive sense of isolation, often intertwined with nature-focused imagery and introspective despair.

The first demo, Am Anfang war es Licht... (2003), introduced Wedard’s skeletal, lo-fi aesthetic: elongated, repetitive guitar lines, minimal percussion, and a suffocating atmosphere that emphasized mood over technicality. A second demo, ...von Liebe und Wäldern (2005), was self-produced in a very limited run and circulated mainly within Sternenfrost’s close circle, reinforcing the project’s underground, almost clandestine character. With Valkyren Frost (2006), Wedard began to refine its compositional approach, balancing harshness with more melodic, almost hypnotic passages that hinted at the project’s future direction.

2006 marked a crucial year with the release of the first full-lengths, Ein Leben in der Ewigkeit and Einsamer Winterweg. These albums expanded Wedard’s sonic palette, weaving in more pronounced melodic themes, ambient textures, and a stronger sense of narrative flow across the tracklists. The music remained raw and emotionally exposed, but the songwriting grew more confident, with recurring motifs of solitude, fading memories, and the pull of an eternal, indifferent nature. Around this period, Wedard also began appearing on splits—such as the collaborations with BlackStream and Symbiosis—further embedding the project within the depressive and atmospheric black metal underground.

The partnership with Ewiges Eis Records became central to Wedard’s evolution. In 2008, the label issued Wo die Ewigkeit die Zeit berĂĽhrt, a full-length that is often regarded as one of the project’s defining statements. Limited to a small digipak run, the album pushed Wedard into more expansive, almost cosmic territory: long, flowing compositions, layered guitars, and a blend of icy black metal with ambient and space-like atmospheres. Tracks unfold slowly, with patient build-ups and melancholic climaxes, giving the record a sense of vastness and introspective depth that has been praised in underground reviews for its emotional resonance and immersive quality.

Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, Wedard remained prolific in the split and EP format. Releases such as Eiskrieg (2007) and Eiskrieg II (2011) showcased a harsher, warlike coldness, while splits with Ancestral, Thou Shell of Death, and others highlighted Wedard’s ability to adapt its core depressive aesthetic to different collaborative contexts. The compilation 10 Years of Wedard (2012) served as both a retrospective and a reaffirmation of the project’s longevity, gathering material that traced its evolution from primitive solitude to more nuanced, atmospheric soundscapes.

Later collaborations, including the split with Moloch (2015) and Schnee & Eis (2017), reinforced Wedard’s alignment with bands that share a similar devotion to bleak, nature-infused black metal. Across these releases, the project continued to explore themes of depression, melancholy, and the stark beauty of winter landscapes, often using extended song structures and subtle ambient elements to evoke a sense of frozen time and emotional stasis. Wedard’s presence on underground samplers—such as the Occultum Productions promo CrĂ©puscule... (Winter 2006–2007) with the track “Winterdepression”—further cemented its reputation as a cult name within the depressive and atmospheric black metal scene.

While Wedard began as a pure studio project, the addition of drummer Karmageddon and later a dedicated live lineup allowed the band to bring its material to the stage without sacrificing the intimate, solitary essence at its core. Live performances tend to emphasize the immersive, trance-like qualities of the songs, translating the project’s introspective recordings into a more immediate, physical experience. Despite its underground status, Wedard has maintained a consistent identity: a vessel for Sternenfrost’s stark, emotional vision, where personal despair, cosmic distance, and the silence of winter forests converge into a singular, haunting sound.
