Bardak (Бардак), whose name translates to “mess” in Russian, is a Latvian black/thrash metal band formed in 2012 in Riga. True to their name, the band embraces a chaotic, irreverent, and high‑energy aesthetic, blending raw black metal aggression with the swagger and looseness of old‑school thrash. Their music is intentionally unpolished, fast, and fueled by a spirit of drunken camaraderie, humor, and anti‑fascist attitude—an unusual thematic combination within the Baltic extreme metal scene.

From the beginning, Bardak positioned themselves as a band that rejects elitism and ideological extremism, instead channeling the rowdy, beer‑soaked side of metal. Their sound is built on sharp, punk‑inflected riffing, rasped vocals, and a straightforward, high‑tempo attack reminiscent of early blackened thrash acts. The band’s lyrics and imagery revolve around alcohol‑fueled chaos, nightlife absurdity, and a tongue‑in‑cheek celebration of disorder, while also taking a clear stance against fascist ideology—setting them apart from many regional contemporaries.

Their debut demo, Vodka All Night Long… (2012), introduced their signature style: fast, reckless, and deliberately messy, capturing the raw spontaneity of their early rehearsals. The release quickly circulated in the underground due to its infectious energy and unapologetically drunken spirit. In 2014, Bardak followed with the Umat EP, a more focused and confident recording that showcased tighter musicianship while retaining the band’s chaotic charm. The EP is often noted for its catchy riffs, aggressive delivery, and the band’s ability to balance humor with genuine metal intensity.

Bardak’s members are active in various corners of the Latvian metal scene, bringing experience from black metal, thrash, death metal, and experimental projects. Their collective background contributes to the band’s eclectic yet cohesive sound. Despite remaining independent, Bardak has maintained a loyal underground following, known for energetic live performances and a refusal to take themselves too seriously.
