Kranium is one of the foundational names of Peruvian extreme metal, active since 1986 and evolving from early thrash/death metal into a distinctive blend of folk, doom, and death metal enriched with Andean wind instruments and themes drawn from Inca culture, occultism, death, society, and human emotion. Their longevity, stylistic evolution, and deep integration of Andean identity have made them a pillar of Peru’s underground scene.
Kranium began under the name Murder (1985–1986), playing heavy rock before shifting toward a more aggressive thrash/death metal sound. In 1986 they adopted the name Kranium, with Eloy Arturo as a founding guitarist and principal songwriter. Early performances placed them alongside seminal Peruvian acts such as Masacre, Narcosis, Leusemia, Mortem, and Hadez, marking them as part of the first wave of Peruvian extreme metal.
By the late 1980s, their sound was heavily influenced by Celtic Frost, Slayer, and Sepultura, and they became a fixture in Lima’s underground concerts, including events like No Helden, Ataque Metal, and Apocalipsis Metal.
Kranium’s identity shifted dramatically in the 1990s. While early demos such as Sociedad o suciedad (1991) and Mundo interior (1992) were rooted in thrash/death metal, the band gradually incorporated Andean flutes, charango, and folk melodies, creating a hybrid style that would later define their legacy. A 2026 retrospective describes them as a band that “survived and imposed itself” with a thrash-heavy sound fused with Andean winds, a combination that became their signature.
This fusion placed them among the earliest Peruvian bands to integrate indigenous instrumentation into extreme metal, predating the folk‑metal wave of the 2000s.
Kranium’s discography spans demos, EPs, live albums, splits, and full‑lengths. The most significant include:
Their releases reflect both continuity and reinvention, with Uma Tullu reaffirming their commitment to Andean‑infused metal.
Kranium’s lineup has changed frequently across four decades, but several members have been central to the band’s identity:
Past members include notable figures from the Peruvian scene, such as Mortis, Manuel “Occult” Fernández, Daniel Roncagliolo, and Georgy Espíritu, each contributing to different stylistic phases.
Kranium occupies a unique place in Peruvian metal history:
Their endurance and stylistic evolution have made them a reference point for younger Peruvian folk‑metal and extreme‑metal bands.
