Nahash stands as one of the foundational pillars of the Lithuanian black metal movement, emerging in 1993 from the ashes of the thrash/black band Nemesis, whose split also gave birth to Poccolus. From the beginning, Nahash embraced a deeply occult, esoteric, and death‑obsessed vision, drawing on ritualistic atmospheres and early second‑wave black metal aggression. Their name—taken from the Biblical serpent who tempts Eve—captures the band’s fascination with forbidden knowledge, spiritual transgression, and the darker strata of myth.

Their earliest recordings, including the 1994 demo Nocticula Hecate and the split Dark Fire Dancing, positioned Nahash at the forefront of the Baltic underground. These releases were raw, primitive, and steeped in ritualistic ambience, earning them a cult following among tape‑traders and early black metal devotees. Critics and zines of the era often highlighted the band’s ability to merge hypnotic repetition with occult atmospheres, creating a sound that felt both ancient and confrontational.

Nahash reached a defining moment with their 1996 full‑length Wellone Aeternitas, widely regarded as one of the most important Lithuanian black metal albums of the 1990s. The record blended harsh, mid‑tempo black metal with atmospheric keyboards, dissonant melodies, and a sense of ceremonial grandeur. Its lyrical themes—death, cosmic darkness, and mystical transformation—cemented the band’s identity as one of the region’s most esoteric acts. Wellone Aeternitas remains a landmark release, often cited for its unique balance of rawness and spiritual depth.

After a long period of silence, the band resurfaced with the Daath demo in 2003, later reworked into the 2016 full‑length of the same name. This later era showcased a more refined, mature sound: still rooted in black metal, but with denser compositions, deeper vocal presence, and a more pronounced ritualistic aura. The album’s release through Drakkar Productions helped reintroduce Nahash to a new generation of listeners, reaffirming their status as a cult yet enduring force.

Throughout their existence, Nahash has been closely intertwined with other key Lithuanian acts. Members have participated in Poccolus, Valefar, Ha Lela, Zpoan Vtenz, Luctus, Crypts of Despair, and others, making the band a central node in the country’s extreme metal lineage. Their influence extends beyond their discography: they helped shape the early identity of Lithuanian black metal, blending Baltic mysticism with occult philosophy long before such themes became widespread.

Still active today, Nahash remains a rare example of a 1990s Lithuanian black metal band that has preserved its original spirit—esoteric, uncompromising, and deeply rooted in the shadows of its homeland.
