Obtest is one of the cornerstone bands of Lithuanian metal—arguably the defining pagan metal act of the country and a foundational force in shaping the Baltic extreme metal identity. Formed in Vilnius in 1992, they began as a raw black metal band before shifting toward pagan‑black metal in 1993, eventually evolving into a uniquely Lithuanian form of pagan/heavy metal that blends aggression, melody, and deep cultural resonance.

Their early years were marked by intense underground activity: rehearsal tapes, live recordings, and demos that circulated widely in the Baltic scene. Releases like Oldness Comming and Prieš audrą (both 1995) captured a band transitioning from black metal ferocity to a more melodic, folk‑infused pagan sound. By the time they released their debut full‑length Tūkstantmetis in 1997, Obtest had already established themselves as a leading voice in Eastern European pagan metal.

The 2001 album Auka seniems dievams is often considered their creative peak—a fierce, triumphant work steeped in Baltic mythology, warlike energy, and soaring melodic guitar lines. It was followed by Iš kartos į kartą (2005) and Gyvybės medis (2008), both of which solidified their shift toward a more heavy‑metal‑driven sound while retaining the pagan spirit that defined their identity. Their lyrics, delivered in Lithuanian, draw heavily from folklore, ancestral memory, and pre‑Christian cosmology, making Obtest one of the most culturally rooted metal bands in the region.

Despite stylistic evolution, Obtest has remained remarkably consistent in spirit: militant, melodic, and deeply tied to Lithuanian heritage. Their influence extends across generations of Baltic metal musicians, and their long‑standing partnership with Osmose Productions has helped bring their work to an international audience.

Their most recent activity includes the 2024 single Ĺ lovÄ— didvyriams, showing that the band continues to create new material more than three decades after their formation.
