UgnÄ—lakis—whose name translates to “fire‑licker”—was a short‑lived but culturally significant pagan metal project from Vilnius, active in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Emerging during a formative period for Lithuanian folk‑pagan metal, the band stood at the crossroads of several influential underground circles, drawing together musicians from Andaja, Ĺ˝alvarinis, Moonrise, Peorth, Kulgrinda, Letarg, and other foundational acts. Their sound blended pagan metal with folk elements and atmospheric keyboards, reflecting the broader Lithuanian movement toward reclaiming pre‑Christian identity through music.

Their sole demo, UgnÄ—lakis (1999), captured the raw, ritualistic energy of the era: melodic yet primitive guitar work, layered keyboards, and vocals that alternated between pagan chanting and harsher delivery. While the band never released a full‑length album, their contribution to the Ledo Takas Magazine #8 Soundcheck CD in 2000 helped cement their presence within the national scene. The track “Link Inirsuiso Veiksmo PradĹľios” showcased their blend of folk‑infused melody and pagan metal aggression, aligning them with the rising wave of Baltic paganism in metal.

UgnÄ—lakis’ final known activity was a 2002 collaboration titled Ĺ˝alvarinis, reflecting the deep overlap between the band’s members and the early lineup of Ĺ˝alvarinis—a group that would go on to become one of Lithuania’s most important folk‑rock institutions. After this collaboration, UgnÄ—lakis quietly dissolved, with its members dispersing into numerous other projects that continued to shape Lithuanian metal and folk music.

The band’s legacy is carried largely through its members, many of whom became central figures in Lithuania’s pagan, folk, and metal scenes. The death of bassist Paulius JaskĹ«nas in 2024 marked a poignant closing chapter for a project that, though brief, contributed to the foundations of Lithuania’s modern pagan metal identity.
