Zpoan Vtenz is one of the earliest and most culturally rooted pagan black metal projects to emerge from Lithuania, originally formed in 1994 in Utena. Their music stands firmly within the Baltic pagan tradition, drawing heavily on Lithuanian folklore, archaic legends, and the mythic memory of the land. Alongside contemporaries such as Poccolus, Nahash, and Ha Lela, Zpoan Vtenz helped shape the first wave of Lithuanian pagan black metal—a scene defined by raw atmosphere, ritualistic melodies, and a deep reverence for ancestral heritage.

Their sole full‑length album, Gimę nugalėt (1997), is considered a cult release within the Baltic underground. The album blends primitive black metal with folk‑infused guitar lines, dual vocals, and a distinctly Lithuanian melodic sensibility. Its atmosphere is steeped in rural mysticism, evoking ancient battles, heroic tales, and the spiritual landscape of Aukštaitija. The record’s raw production and earnest delivery have earned it a lasting reputation among collectors and historians of early pagan black metal.

During their initial active years, Zpoan Vtenz contributed several tracks to influential Baltic compilations, including Dark Fire Dancing II and III (Dangus Productions) and Unto a Long Glory… (Beverina Productions). These compilations played a crucial role in spreading Lithuanian pagan black metal across Europe, placing Zpoan Vtenz alongside the most important underground acts of the era.

The band’s lineup was closely intertwined with other foundational Lithuanian projects. Vocalist/guitarist Ramūnas “Munis” Personis was active in Ha Lela, Nemesis, Poccolus, Sala, Sovijus, and others—making him one of the key figures in shaping the Lithuanian pagan/folk black metal identity. Drummer Audrius Simkūnas, also of Ha Lela and Poccolus, contributed to the band’s ritualistic rhythmic foundation. Vocalist Vilma Ciplytė (R.I.P. 2009), known for her work in Ha Lela and Gostauta, added a unique folkloric dimension to the project, her voice becoming one of the defining elements of Zpoan Vtenz’s sound.

After a long period of silence, the project resurfaced in 2024, marking a rare revival of a classic Lithuanian pagan black metal name. This return has sparked renewed interest in their early work and positioned Zpoan Vtenz once again as a living part of Lithuania’s mythic musical lineage.
