Apokrypha is a melodic death/black metal band from WĂĽrzburg, Bavaria, whose roots stretch back to 1999 under the earlier name To the Seven. Reborn as Apokrypha in 2003, the band forged a sound that blends the aggression of melodic black metal with the structural weight and emotional depth of melodic death metal. Their music is driven by themes of moral ambiguity, occult symbolism, and the hidden forces that shape human behavior, giving their work a philosophical and esoteric edge uncommon in the German melodic extreme metal scene.

Origins: From To the Seven to Apokrypha (1999–2003)

The band’s earliest incarnation, To the Seven, was active from 1999 to 2003 and laid the groundwork for what Apokrypha would become. Their style already leaned toward melodic black/death metal, but the rebranding in 2003 marked a shift toward a more refined, concept‑driven identity. Several founding members—including Freddy Schartl, Cosmin, and Andreas Hofmann—carried over into the new era, bringing continuity and a shared creative vision.

Their first releases under the new name, the Moral Sloth demo and the Black Demons EP (both 2003), showcased a band eager to push beyond genre conventions. These early works combined sharp riffing, atmospheric touches, and lyrical explorations of moral decay and hidden truths. The track “To the Seven” even appeared on a Legacy Magazine sampler in 2004, giving the band early exposure.

Breakthrough: To the Seven (2004)

In 2004, Apokrypha released their debut full‑length To the Seven, a culmination of their early years and a bridge between their past and present identities. The album blended melodic black metal ferocity with death metal precision, supported by layered guitar work and dynamic drumming. Its themes revolved around occult mysteries, moral conflict, and the tension between spiritual insight and human corruption.

The album received strong underground praise for its intensity, melodic sensibility, and conceptual cohesion, establishing Apokrypha as a serious force within the Bavarian extreme metal scene.

Lineup Evolution & Maturation (2005–2013)

After the debut, the band underwent several lineup changes. Lead guitarist Jochen Sues departed in 2005, replaced by Josef Echter, whose arrival brought a more technical and melodic approach to the band’s guitar work. The core trio—Hofmann, Schartl, and Cosmin—remained stable, giving Apokrypha a consistent creative backbone.

During this period, members were active in numerous other projects (Thornostrum, Sons of Eternity, q.age, Dvalin, and more), enriching Apokrypha’s sound with influences from melodic death, black metal, and progressive metal.

After nearly a decade of silence, the band resurfaced with the Procession EP in 2013. This release demonstrated a matured, more atmospheric approach, with tighter songwriting and a stronger emphasis on melody and emotional depth. Procession reaffirmed the band’s relevance and hinted at a renewed creative direction.

Identity & Legacy

Apokrypha’s music is defined by:

  • melodic black/death metal riffing
  • philosophical and occult lyrical themes
  • a balance between aggression and atmosphere
  • a consistent, veteran lineup with deep roots in the WĂĽrzburg metal scene

Their work stands out for its conceptual depth—exploring morality, hidden knowledge, and the darker corners of human nature—while maintaining the visceral impact expected of melodic extreme metal.

Though their discography is compact, Apokrypha has maintained a loyal underground following and continues to represent one of Bavaria’s enduring melodic black/death metal acts.
