Bethor is one of the longestârunning and most idiosyncratic black metal projects in Serbia, founded in 2001 by Mikica MariÄ (Bethor) as a oneâman band in Mladenovac. From the beginning, Bethor embraced a raw, abrasive, and deeply personal form of Satanic black metalâloâfi, confrontational, and steeped in occult hostility. By 2004, the project expanded into a full band, but the creative nucleus has always remained Bethor himself, whose prolific output and uncompromising aesthetic have made the project a cult name in the Serbian underground.
The earliest demosâAblaze in the Mladenovac Sky and JevanÄelje po Mikici (both 2001), followed by Amitra (2001) and the twin 2002 demos Bewitchment of Mortal Agony and Demogorgonâestablished Bethor’s chaotic, primitive sound. These recordings circulated heavily in tapeâtrading circles and helped define the project’s reputation for rawness and ideological extremity.
The first fullâlength, Demogorgon (2004), marked the transition from solo project to full lineup. Its harsh production and occult themes made it a polarizing but memorable release.
Potonja (2006) continued the project’s evolution, followed by a series of tribute albumsâThe Return of Darkness and Evil (Bathory tribute, 2007) and Tribute to Interfector (2009)âreflecting Bethor’s deep roots in both global and Serbian black metal traditions.
The collaborative release Bethor / Mor / Anality (2009) further embedded the band within the Serbian underground network.
Two compilations in 2016 (Bethor and 25 godina) documented the project’s extensive early output and marked a period of renewed activity.
With a refreshed lineup, Bethor released Anarchia Diaboli (2017), a more structured and forceful album that reaffirmed the band’s commitment to Satanic black metal. nataS liaH (2020) followed, continuing the project’s tradition of abrasive, occultâdriven hostility.
The 2024 fullâlength Stockholm 1984 / 11071975 Mizantrop shows Bethor still evolving, still prolific, and still rooted in the raw, antiâmodern ethos that defined the project from the beginning.
Bethor stands as one of Serbia’s longestâactive black metal entitiesâchaotic, prolific, ideologically unwavering, and deeply embedded in the country’s underground lineage. Its connections to numerous other Serbian acts (Assassination, Grimorium Verum, All My Sins, etc.) make it a key node in the regional black metal network.
