Genre: Post‑Black Metal

Themes: Depression, Emptiness, Melancholy, Anti‑modernity

Bonjour Tristesse is a post‑black metal project from Munich, founded and entirely driven by Nathanael, a central figure in the German post‑black and atmospheric metal landscape. Active first from 2008 to 2012 and revived in 2014, the project channels a stark, emotionally raw vision shaped by themes of depression, urban alienation, emptiness, and resistance to modernity. The name—French for “hello sadness”—is taken from Paul Éluard’s poetry and echoes the existential melancholy that defines the project’s sound.

Origins & Early Era (2008–2012)

Bonjour Tristesse began as a solitary outlet for Nathanael, known for his work in Heretoir, Thränenkind/King Apathy, and Agrypnie. The debut album Par un sourire (2010) established the project’s identity: atmospheric post‑black metal infused with depressive intensity, melodic layering, and a strong emotional core. The album’s title (“by a smile”) hints at the project’s fascination with fragile emotional states and the tension between beauty and despair.

After 2012, the project entered a hiatus as Nathanael focused on other bands.

Reactivation & Urban Despair (2014–2018)

Bonjour Tristesse returned in 2014 with renewed purpose. The 2018 single Your Ultimate Urban Nightmare and its accompanying full‑length of the same name captured a darker, more suffocating vision. This era of the project focused on:

  • the psychological violence of modern urban life
  • alienation and emotional numbness
  • the collapse of meaning in hyper‑modern society

Musically, the project embraced a harsher, more urgent post‑black metal sound, while retaining the atmospheric melancholy of earlier work.

Philosophical Expansion (2023–2024)

The 2020s marked a period of conceptual and musical refinement.

Against Leviathan! (2023) is a fierce, politically and philosophically charged album confronting the dehumanizing machinery of modern civilization. It blends post‑black metal with crust, post‑metal, and atmospheric elements, creating a sound that is both furious and mournful.

The World Without Us (2024) continues this trajectory, exploring themes of ecological collapse, existential exhaustion, and the haunting beauty of a world imagined beyond humanity. It is one of the project’s most expansive and emotionally resonant works.

Identity & Legacy

Bonjour Tristesse stands out for:

  • deeply emotional, introspective post‑black metal
  • a solitary creative vision shaped by Nathanael’s distinctive style
  • themes of depression, anti‑modernity, and existential critique
  • a blend of atmospheric beauty and raw, cathartic intensity
  • strong ties to the German post‑black lineage (Heretoir, King Apathy, Agrypnie)

The project occupies a unique space where personal despair meets social critique, creating music that is both intimate and confrontational.

Bonjour Tristesse is French for "hello sadness". It comes from a poem written by French poet Paul Éluard (1895 - 1952), and it is also the title of the first novel by French novelist Françoise Sagan (1935 - 2004).
