Eternal Abyss is one of Paraguay’s longest‑running depressive black metal projects, active since 2009 and centered entirely around the multi‑instrumentalist Aña. The project embodies the bleakest and most introspective side of Paraguayan extreme metal, channeling themes of death, misanthropy, and existential collapse through a raw, minimalist sound. Eternal Abyss stands apart from the more aggressive black and death metal acts of the region by embracing a style rooted in sorrowful melodies, repetitive hypnotic structures, and an atmosphere of total desolation.
The early demos Death and Destruction (2010) and Cursed (2011) established the project’s foundation: lo‑fi production, anguished vocals, and melancholic guitar lines that evoke isolation and emotional decay. These recordings circulated primarily through underground tape networks, gaining attention among listeners drawn to the depressive black metal movement emerging globally at the time. Demo 2013 continued this trajectory, refining the project’s sense of atmosphere while maintaining its raw, solitary character.
After a period of silence, Eternal Abyss resurfaced with IV (2019), a demo that marked a shift toward more structured compositions and a deeper immersion into depressive black metal aesthetics. That same year, the project released its first full‑length, Doomed to Eternal Abyss, a defining work that expanded the project’s emotional range. The album blends slow, mournful passages with bursts of chaotic intensity, reflecting the project’s thematic focus on inner torment and existential ruin. Its reception within the underground highlighted Eternal Abyss as one of Paraguay’s most authentic voices in the depressive black metal genre.
In 2021, the compilation Echoes from the Past gathered earlier material, offering a retrospective look at the project’s evolution. Later that year, Eternal Abyss released Ad Mortem, a second full‑length that pushed the project further into atmospheric despair. The album’s sound is colder and more refined, with layered guitars and a suffocating ambience that reinforces the project’s commitment to emotional extremity.
Aña’s involvement in numerous other Paraguayan extreme metal acts—ranging from black/thrash to doom and death metal—has shaped Eternal Abyss with a unique blend of influences, yet the project remains firmly rooted in depressive black metal’s solitary ethos. Eternal Abyss continues to operate independently, releasing limited physical editions through Desecration of Souls Productions and maintaining a cult presence within the South American underground.
