Introitus stands as one of the foundational pillars of Serbian black metal and among the earliest black metal acts in Eastern Europe. Formed in 1995 in Kragujevac, the band emerged at a time when extreme metal in the Balkans was still in its formative stages, making their existence both pioneering and historically significant. They were the first Serbian metal band to secure a deal with a foreign label—Austria’s CCP Records—an unprecedented achievement that placed Serbia on the international black metal map.

Musically, Introitus embodied the raw, atmospheric spirit of mid‑90s black metal, blending cold tremolo riffing with a strong sense of ancient mysticism and naturalistic darkness. Their sound was rooted in the Scandinavian tradition but carried a uniquely Balkan aura—earthy, ritualistic, and steeped in a sense of primordial evil. Their lyrics and imagery revolved around forgotten rites, the cruelty of nature, and the looming presence of ancient forces.

1996 marked the peak of their activity, with the release of two full‑length albums: ...as Hordes Gather and Skies of the Unholy Departed. Both records were noted for their harsh production, atmospheric layering, and the interplay between Defluens’ commanding vocal/drum performance and Svantevid’s cold, melodic guitar work. These albums circulated widely in the European underground, earning Introitus a cult following and recognition from zines that praised their authenticity and dedication to the genre’s core aesthetics.

Their contribution to the Majestic Forest – Compilation No. 1 in 1999 with the track “Towards the Enchanting Dark” further solidified their legacy, showcasing their atmospheric side and reinforcing their status as early Serbian black metal innovators.

Though their activity ceased quietly and without formal announcement, Introitus remains a revered name among collectors and historians of Eastern European black metal. Their pioneering role, early international presence, and uncompromising artistic vision continue to influence Serbian extreme metal decades after their dissolution.
