Искон (Iskon) is one of the longest‑running and most respected black metal projects from Serbia, formed in 2004 in Novi Sad. The band’s name—meaning “the primordial” or “the original essence”—reflects its philosophical and naturalistic orientation. Искон’s music is rooted in traditional black metal but distinguished by its introspective, contemplative character, focusing on themes of ancestral memory, the immutable laws of nature, and the cyclical nature of existence.
From the beginning, Искон established a sound built on cold, melodic riffing, mid‑tempo atmospheric passages, and a raw yet expressive vocal delivery. Their approach avoids sensationalism and instead embraces a solemn, reflective tone, drawing inspiration from the natural world and the metaphysical weight of time. Critics and underground listeners often describe their work as “stoic,” “ancient,” and “philosophical,” placing them among the more thoughtful and spiritually oriented black metal acts in the Balkans.
The band’s debut album, ...Док гнев прошлости навире (2007), introduced their signature style: melancholic melodies intertwined with harsh, traditional black metal structures. The follow‑up, Тишина уснулих векова (2008), expanded their atmospheric dimension, offering a deeper exploration of themes related to forgotten ages and the silence of vanished worlds. Their third album, Где круг вечни своj бескраj нуди (2010), is often regarded as their most mature work—an expansive, meditative record that balances aggression with a profound sense of timelessness.
Throughout their career, Искон has remained a one‑man project led by Valarh, whose consistent vision has shaped the band’s identity. His multi‑instrumental work and lyrical direction give the project a unified, personal character. Despite operating quietly and without mainstream promotion, Искон has earned a dedicated following within the Serbian and Eastern European underground, appreciated for their authenticity and unwavering artistic focus.
