Simargal emerged in late 1995 in Trstenik, originally under the name Abadon before adopting their definitive moniker after only a few rehearsals. Drawing their name from a deity of the Slavic pantheon, the band quickly positioned itself within the early Serbian Black Metal movement, developing a melodic yet aggressive sound that blended traditional Black Metal ferocity with atmospheric keyboards and occult‑infused themes. Their early work circulated through the underground via rehearsal tapes and compilation appearances, helping establish them as one of the formative acts of the Rasina region’s extreme metal scene. Their debut full‑length Meeting with... (2001) showcased a raw but ambitious approach, marked by sharp tremolo riffs, ritualistic keyboard layers, and vocals steeped in mysticism and satanic imagery. By the time ...Hidden God (2004) arrived, Simargal had refined their melodic sensibilities, integrating more structured songwriting and a stronger symphonic presence while retaining the harshness of their roots. The band’s contributions to compilations such as Scream Until You Like It Vol. 1 and Sons of Eastern Darkness further solidified their reputation within the Serbian underground, placing them alongside other rising regional acts. Lineup changes throughout the 2000s brought shifts in texture and performance dynamics, particularly with the addition of keyboardist Vladimir Jovanović and later guitarist Ivan Jovanović, both of whom contributed to a fuller, more atmospheric sound. Drummer Zoran Dragojević—known for his work with several prominent Serbian bands—returned in 2006, reinforcing the rhythmic backbone with a more seasoned and forceful style. Despite periods of reduced activity, Simargal maintained a steady presence, continuing to rehearse, perform, and record new material, including the Promo 2003 demo and the forthcoming Intus Susceptio (2025), signaling a renewed creative phase. Across their career, Simargal have remained committed to the melodic Black Metal tradition while preserving a distinctly Serbian identity—drawing on local myth, occult symbolism, and a raw underground ethos. Their longevity and consistency have earned them a respected place within the national scene, particularly among followers of the early 2000s Eastern European Black Metal wave.
